Paharganj Market

The name Paharganj derives its name from the small erstwhile hills in the area, a few decades ago. It was once significant hamlet of Shahjahanabad, one of the five main markets situated outside the walled city. It was also a major grain market with the head office of the17th century tax collector. So how come the grain market become a tourist place with hotels, shops and restaurants dominating its face? The answer would take us back to 1950s period when immigrants from Pakistan were given small commercial establishment, and after that the boost was given by the 1970s Hippie Era.

Bargaining is the Way
Tourists' quest for the exotic, colorful, vibrant but cheap India was exploited by the businessmen, till date. Shopping in Paharganj market can be big hassle. And this is not because of the confined, dirty and over-crowded streets. This is because one hardly knows what he should buy from where and at what rate. The Delhiites rarely go there for regular shopping but few mind the discomforts to lug out some beautiful and funky silver jewelry and clothes. There are some shops which are genuine enough and reasonably priced. But wherever you shop, remember just one thing. Bargain albeit politely as if it is your fundamental right.

Textile Shops
There are hundreds of places where you can buy bright, embellished and eye-catching stuff. You can buy things like flowy linen pyjamas, harem pants, keffiyehs and of course kurtas. Certain shops sell only leather accessories so if you want to but a leather belt with a funky twist do visit them. A very famous shop called Aman Exports sell beaded jewelry in bright neon colors and metallic hues. They tend to add a retro look an outfit and are quite chic. Buying an entire outfit, complete with accessories will set you back by Rs 1,500.

Jewel and Handicrafts Shops
You would find a bewildering array of colorful silver, bead, shell, laq, stone and wooden jewelry here. There are bangles with different designs & sizes, neck-pieces, handmade earrings and rings in beautiful and sometimes quirky designs. These makeshift stalls also stock ethnic handmade bags and purses. Sometimes these would be replaced by other handicrafts such as small brass statues, key-rings, wall decorations etc. Cost of jewelry and handicrafts depends upon the material.

Shoe Shops
There are a lot of shoe shops in Paharganj and any compulsive shoe buyer would find it a paradise. One can get ethnic flip-flops (kolhapuri chappals), Osho jute flip-flops, roman sandals, decorated jootis and floaters. Price varies according to what one is buying.
