Cathedral
of the Sacred Heart is one of the best known and visited churches in
India. The likes of Sir Edwin Lutyens, Father Luke and Henry Medd have
been associated with The Church of Redemption. The 14 acres of land,
which forms the cathedral grounds, was acquired in 1920 for just Rs
7000, complete with a perpetual lease and a yearly rental of Rs 365. Two
of the most prestigious schools of Delhi, Saint Columbas and
Convent of Jesus and Mary flank the either side of the church. The
church was completed in 1933-34 with almost all of the decoration
donated by wealthy and influential people of that time.Location
The Cathedral of the Sacred Heart is located near Gol Dak Khana or the Main post office on Bhai Vir Singh Marg in Connaught Place.
How It Came into Being
The idea of constructing the church was nurtured by Father Luke. He belonged to the Franciscan First Order, founded by St. Francis of Assisi (1182-1226). Rev Dr. E. Vanni, Archbishop of Agra in 1929, laid the foundation stone of the cathedral and the construction began in 1930. Sir Anthony de Mello donated the main altar of the church, which is made of pure marble. The Archbishop of Agra presented the bell, vestments and altar furniture. The rich colonial officers of the British Empire financed other things.
Architecture
One can clearly see the Italian influence on its structure. The facade of white pillars, supporting the canopy, looks beautiful and attractive. Their setting against a dark brick background lends them an ethereal charm. On each side of the cathedral's entrance porch, there are circular arcaded turrets rising above the roof. The interiors look grand and lavish with their towering curved roof, polished stone floors and broad arches.
